Simple Septic Maintenance Tips

If you own a home with a septic system, there are a few things you need to stay on top of. Nothing complicated, just the basics. Staying ahead of small problems now can save you thousands later.

At L.J. Construction, we’ve been working on Sonoma County septic services since 1966. We’re a family-run company that believes in doing things right the first time, without any overcomplications. Here’s a few tips and tricks we always tell homeowners when they ask how to keep their septic system healthy.

Pump It and Check It

This one is straightforward. If you don’t pump your tank regularly, it’s going to fill up. That’s when problems start.

We recommend having your system pumped every 2 to 4 years. How often you need your system pumped depends on your tank size and how many people are in your home. Getting an inspection with your pumping service can also catch any small issues before they turn into bigger ones. Regular maintenance is cheaper than an emergency.

Don’t Overload It

Septic systems can only handle so much water at one time. If you run the dishwasher, laundry, and take a shower all at once, that’s a lot of water going into your tank.

Here’s what helps:

  • Fix any leaks as soon as possible, a running toilet can waste hundreds of gallons.
  • Install low-flow faucets and showerheads.
  • Spread out water use across the day instead of all at once.

Little things like this take pressure off the system.

Watch What Goes Down the Drain

Your tank is built strictly for wastewater and toilet paper. That’s it. Anything else can cause problems.

What to flush:

  • Toilet paper (septic safe is best)

What not to flush:

  • Wipes (even the ones that say “flushable”)
  • Paper towels
  • Diapers
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Grease or oil from cooking
  • Harsh chemical cleaners

If it doesn’t easily break down, don’t send it down the toilet or drain. Keep a trash can close by for the stuff that doesn’t flush or drain.

Take Care of Your Drain Field

The drain field is the part of your septic system that handles wastewater after it leaves the tank. If it’s not working right, your whole system is at risk for a major repair or total replacement.

Do this:

  • Keep cars, boats, and heavy equipment off of and away from that area.
  • Plant grass or flowers, not trees, as tree roots can damage the pipes underneath.
  • Don’t build anything over it and don’t dig without knowing exactly where your lines are underground.

Treat it like an active part of your system, not just another patch of lawn.

Use Products That Won’t Harm the System

The bacteria inside your tank break down waste. Strong chemicals can kill that bacteria.

Here’s what helps:

  • Using natural cleaners like vinegar and baking soda.
  • Try bacteria additives from the hardware store if your tank needs a little boost.

These are some easy and simple changes that can make a big difference over time.

Make Sure Everyone in the House Knows

One person flushing the wrong thing can mess up the entire system for everyone. Make sure your kids, house guests, or anyone else in your home know the basics.

It’s worth having a quick conversation to avoid a costly mistake.
